In Brussels, many residents have neither a garage nor a private parking space. Can you still drive electric? Yes, but you need to organise your charging. Here are the options for EV charging without a garage in Brussels, from the most practical to the most restrictive.
What is not possible
Let's be clear: without a private space, a ‘home’ charger is not possible. And running a cable from your home to a car parked on the street is not a solution: it is dangerous for pedestrians and is not allowed on the public road.
1. A space in your building's car park
If your building has a car park, even if you do not yet have a space there, make enquiries: renting or buying a space and fitting it with a charger is often the most comfortable solution. The project is prepared with the property manager (syndic): see our page on EV chargers in apartment buildings.
2. A rented space nearby
Some private or office car parks rent out spaces to local residents. If the owner agrees, a charger can be installed there, possibly a removable one that can move with you.
3. Charging at work
If your employer equips its car park, you can charge during the day. For a company car, this is often the simplest solution. Businesses can equip their car park for their staff.
4. Public chargers
The public charging network is growing in Brussels. It is handy as a back-up, but the price per kWh is generally higher than at home and availability is not guaranteed.
5. Supermarket and shopping centre car parks
Useful in a pinch or to top up while you shop, but they are no substitute for a regular solution.
